OpenAI and Broadcom unveil Jalapeno, OpenAI's first custom inference chip

OpenAI and Broadcom revealed Jalapeno, a reticle-sized inference ASIC co-designed in just nine months and aimed at gigawatt-scale data centers. Early tests show substantially better performance per watt than current silicon, with first deployments targeted for late 2026 in a direct strike at Nvidia.
